Dr Martyn David Smith

Martyn Smith is a historian of modern and contemporary Japan and lecturer in Japanese Studies at the University of Sheffield. He is the author of ‘The hell of modern sound: A history of urban noise in modern Japan’ as well as Sound hunting in postwar Japan: recording technology, aurality, mobility, and consumerism, Sound Studies: Vol 7, No. 1.

He first book discussed mass media and nationalism: Mass Media, Consumerism and National Identity in Postwar Japan 1952-1972, and he has also written on gender and consumerism: ‘The ‘hedonistic revolution of everyday life’: Men’s magazines, consumerism and the Japanese salaryman in the 1960s’, East Asian Journal of Popular Culture, Volume 8, Number 2, 1 September 2022, pp. 227-243(17).
